A system that does a task but does not show how it makes its decisions. You can review the input and the output, but you cannot review how the model arrived to its conclusions. For example, a company uses an AI tool to sort job applications. The tool reviews every resume and produces a ranked list of candidates. Recruiters can only review the final rankings. They cannot understand which parts of each application mattered most or how the tool compared one applicant to another.
